Meeting my brother

My great birthday celebration was yesterday. Finally, I met my brother here in Hamburg Altona at the Aida cruise terminal. He is working on the ship. He guided me exploring the ship and had my dinner inside also..along with the other crews. Was it a coincidence?

I heard few times that he is working for Aida and the port is in Hamburg. But, I didn’t really pay attention on the name of the port-Hamburg. I’m not good in Geography: I cant memorize the world map perfectly before I visit the place. Then when I told him I have a chance to study in Hamburg…he said, it’s a good opportunity because we might meet there. Then I said ‘are we talking about the same Hamburg?’ 😀 , got surprised a little bit.

After so long…then the time came..and we meet in Hamburg-Altona where the cruise terminal is. On Saturday afternoon.

New place, new.. (o_O)

At first, when I moved from Bali to Java..the most shocking moment that I still remember was the way my land lady pointing something to me. She was using her TOE.

It was out of my imagination.

For us (especially in my family)..pointing using part of your foot when you are so healthy to use your hand, was..very hard for me. It was very…un-polite.

(o_O)

——-

Then I moved to India. My first land lady told ‘Hey, you Indonesian girls..you take shower two times a day! don’t waste Indian water!

and

every time you people..you say..thank you..sorry..thank you..sorry! Now you gave me this food, do you want me to say thank you to you!?

(o_O)

——–

Then I moved to Germany. I have no land lady, but I live with a flat mate. She was spraying perfume air freshener while i was cooking my food and told ‘Your food smells very bad!

——–

Any way, these are some shots of my ‘smelly foods‘ that I eat everyday. I prepare my food mainly with Union, Garlic and Chili. Surely with salt and paper too. I have no complete spices like what we use at home.

Yep, new place…new (o_O) and some people just (o_O).

This post is a share of what I experienced. It doesn’t bother me anymore. Live goes on…

Ich genieße mein leben! mit einem großen Lächeln.

Why I eat rice?

“RICE GIRL” that was a name given to me while I was in India. Even now also..many new friends wonder why I eat rice 3 times a day as main food!?

bali

I was born in Bali, one of Indonesia’s islands. Indonesia is a tropical country, even not all of the places can produce rice. Bali is, of course, a tropical island. In that small island, 5,632 km² approximated area-with the population more than 4 million people nowadays, we are blessed with volcanoes, rivers, forests, lakes, ocean, etc which make the soil rich. From long time ago, people grow Paddy or rice grain. Paddy is best growing in climate like what we have, it can be growth the whole year…which only depends on water and the sun. We have sun..whole year 🙂

tabanan

Moreover, in Indonesia, Bali is popular and recorded to have the best irrigation system for watering the paddy field. Our irrigation system named Subak and also mentioned as the world heritage by the UNESCO (the detail can be found in this link).

sawah

In erlier days, the rice as the main food also mixed with casava and corn. But nowadays, the main food is only rice..and to complete the menu..we have vegetables and meat/fish/eggs/etc as the side dishes. I myself won’t worry about the glukose the rice contains (as what people are afraid of), because I can balance it with vegetables and the side dishes.

Every country is unique, just similar to human uniqeness. I wont blame why my friends from Uganda eat Banana as their main food, why in India..paratha can be one of their main foods? or why in Europe have bread or pasta or noodle as their food.
Look at the natural resources they have. There are lands where only wheat can grow, or only banana fit to their motherland..and so on.

Every source: rice, bread, noodle, banana, casava, etc..has it’s own adavantages and disadvantages. Balancing is the key. (now, I am in Europe..and this land offers most of foods made by wheat. I’m adjusting myself.).

Anyway, to know better..I welcome everyone in my native home- through pictures:

Simply speaking: I eat rice because since I was child my mom prepares rice and everyone at home eat rice.

Second winter!

It was in the day where I have uploaded of a picture with flowers that I have found during morning run, in the previous post. While walking back from the main library to the institute..I was talking to…’God’ (well actually I was talking with myself, imagining that God was walking beside me 😀 )

I said “God..is it true, spring is coming soon? Why? I feel it is too soon..I’m still enjoying the winter God. I like the struggle..” #looking at the bushes and somethimes plucking the leaves in the sidewalk#

At night, a friend sent me message about the thick snow which will come in the next two days. I was like..no way, spring is coming though!

Then the next day, when I woke up in the morning..I saw strong wind blowing the snow and the street infront of my appartment became white

???????????????????????????????

Is it a dream? 😀

Then it’s true what my friend told, the snow became thicker..and even there was small snow storm also.

Everything’s covered by the snow. Again.

And I was like….

Second winter of this year!! Is it because of ME??? 😀

Pengrupukan: A day before Nyepi

A day before the Nyepi day is Pengrupukan. On this day…we have another ritual where everyone outside, the streets filled by people. Totally different with the Nyepi day which is totally silent.

To celebrate this Pengrupukan, the youths preparing the Giant Puppets in their community. In Bali we have youth communities for every village (can’t explain it properly though 😀 )

After school, the youths usually gather in a building which is built for the their activities..and they start working, making the giant puppets. All together. They usually collect the money to make the puppets from the charity..or something like that.

In present time the puppets can be made by wires, or sponges..etc. But mainly it is made from Bamboo and then they color it. I like to see the boys doing that. Full of creativity and ideas. Lots of works and based by a good teamwork. Usually it starts around 3 months before Pengrupukan.

The idea is: Make the puppet, then carry it all around the village, and then in the end…BURN it! Why? because the puppets are symbol of evils..and on that day..people carrying it on the street in the hope we can walk them away from our environment. Then, we won’t need the puppets and to clean everything from the evil things…so..it is burned in the flame.

It has deeper philosophy actually, but..i prefer to don’t explain it here. It is my page, I just want to share the activity on Pengrupukan 😀

This is the capture how they start the work.

188845_10150110762804928_781036_n

During the work, they mingle..having some talks, joking around with each other and having food together..socializing 🙂

66482_505275659509802_967950574_n

The works usually showed on the street, it makes them proud of what they have done so far 🙂 It’s about showing the art.

188854_10150113629614928_2850366_n

Not only scary evils they make, but..also some funny puppets

580715_3903095994504_2084803677_n

And..till the day comes. The youths eagerly waiting for this, the boys are preparing their energy to carry the puppets which are..so damn heavy! They carry it together. And some of them preparing the traditional musics or even mixed it with the modern one. It is started from mid day..till mid night. Because the next morning..Nyepi starts, where everyone should be at home.

And, I have found one video showing what i was just talking.

NYEPI: The day of silence

Today is Nyepi day. It’s the biggest ritual for Balinese Hindu…and celebrated once a year based on Balinese calendar. It’s not the first time I miss the celebration, but..still I feel I miss home..

Let me tell a bit about this celebration. The points are on this day we do the ‘Catur Brata Penyepian’:

  • Amati Geni: No fire or light
  • Amati Karya: No working
  • Amati Lelunganan: No travelling
  • Amati Lelanguan: No self-entertainment

This ritual starts from 6am and ended in the next day…6am.

On this day, Bali is shutted down. The Island is so silent, less noise..less (much less) pollution. There is no activity on the road, all shops are closed, even all the domestic and international flights (from and to Bali) are stopped on this day. Just silence.

It’s the time for the island and the people to take a rest. It’s a lazy time for everyone :D.

Foods are prepared a day before and all day we just gather with all family members and have a conversations, laughing, discussing, eating…together..at home.

In the past, even there were no electricity too. But, because of so many reasons, nowadays the local government allowed the electricity to still on.

Today I’m celebrating it with myself, doing the work as usual. There is exception for my case. I do my morning prayer as usual, and hopefully God understands my situation.

When I was sneaking at the newsfeed on fb, I have found status updated about the beauty of the stars in Bali’s sky this night.

I captured some of them to remind me of my home…thousands miles away from here.

nyepi6

nyepi8nyepi9nyepi5

Not only from the Hindus..some also were written by others..which are non-Hindu. We live in diversity. Even though the population in Bali is dominated by Hindu, but..we respect others and the same thing happens for the celebration of other religions.

Thanks for the update dear Facebookers.

There are less activity on facebook which is updated from Bali. Those which I captured, were from some (except the non Hindu)..who doesnt consider facebooking as self-entertainment. Digital world is another topic of discussion 😀

Anyway..the sky is clear, I wish I can see the stars tonight from the window of my apartment 🙂

Bali Kite Festival

Kite Festival is another activity of the youth communities in Bali. Each community prepared the kites for the competition by their self. The kites are HUGE! The prize is not the most interest here, because most of the contestants joined this competition for FUN! and it is FUN! there are around 1145 youth communities joining this competition for this time festival. And for three days competition, per day there are around 10K people come to the field to watch.

Below is the video showing how the kites were carried

Spring is coming!

Just came back from morning run! and..look at this sweet thing that I’ve found 🙂

Woke up in the morning, then prepared my food for the whole day..and, i went for a run. People were looking at me like “what!?  it’s drizzling and temperature is 0.7 dgree!?she wears no gloves and running with thin clothes..at 7 am in the morning??” <–this question was in my imagination only.. 😀

There was no one in the park, except me.

I captured this photo using mobile phone camera. This is my benefit for having mobile phone with camera ^_^

Apakah Singular Value Decomposition?

A = [3 0; -6 0]

dan sebuah matriks (atau vektor) :

x_1 = [-1; 2]

Kemudian mirip dengan contoh di atas, ilustrasi ke dua:

My weather struggle-Cold Allergy

I got another symptom since last night. At home it is called Cold Allergy or (I browsed the correct name for this) Cold Urticaria or Cold Hives.

From Wikipedia:

Symptoms:

When the body is exposed to the cold, hives appear. Hives result from dilation of capillaries which allow fluid to flow out into the surrounding tissue which is the epidermis. They resolve when the body absorbs this fluid. The border of a hive is described as polycyclic, or made up of many circles, and changes as fluid leaks out and then is absorbed.

Cause

The hives are a histamine reaction in response to cold stimuli, including a drastic drop in temperature, cold air, and cold water.

Treatment

The most important treatment is to stay warm.

Tangan

Now…let me deal with this and I will update this post whenever I have the answer.

———

Today, March 14, 2013: No more itching..and it has dried (at the beginning, it was like..swollen, there was water inside my skin). How? I just keep it dry, wear warm clothes and protect my body from the cold. I take warm bath, eat healthy food and..I put baby powder to keep it dry.

I wish it wont come again.. No more allergy, bitte..

For the allergy, I just want to say..

bye

My weather-struggle: Cold Feet

I had this experience when the snow was quite thick and it was too cold for my feet, I cant bear to feel the cold ice absorbed inside the shoes. I didnt have any experience before. My flatmate, which is originate from Europe…seemed didn’t care (lately I realized the reason, because she is use to this weather. It’s her weather) when I was trying to explain my problem. My feet got too cold, and even to walk to Uni from my appartment, I felt my feet was freezing. I cant move my fingers.

Frosbite and Hypotermia frightened me. A friend said the temperature sometimes fall below -20 degrees. Can you imagine how scared I was? Last time in Bromo mountain I felt the coldest temperature in Indonesia, it was 5 degrees and all of us were shivering..even we wore multiple layers of jackets.

I tried to calm my self..and try to solve my problem.

I tried from the easiest and cheapest way.

1. Layering the inner base of my shoes.

20121210_190350FAILED.

It absorbed the cold water. The longer I walk in the snow…the more the water absorbed.

2. Protector Sprayer

20121210_190710-1FAILED. Seems very useless 😉

3. This one the idiot way, but I was thinking ‘why not?’. Most of the people in the forum who were having the same thing, they suggested this idea and they said it works for them. The idea is covering the feet using PLASTIC BAG.

Kaki1

Kaki2

Kaki3

Kaki4

FAILED. The plastic trapped the cold and it evaporated inside..plus the heat from the tightened plastic make it perfectly melted inside and make my feet feel colder. Well, I know it was insane, but..atleast I proved it. It is insane! 😀

Then, at last…I cant wait for any longer. I dont want to think of it anymore. I chose the last option. BUY A NEW SHOES..THE BEST ONE and SPECIAL FOR WINTER. I chose ADIDAS.

my adidas

PROBLEM SOLVED.

No more complaining about Cold Feet. It is so warm, and Perfect. Very expensive, but worth it.

Case closed.

The Gifts

When I was about to leave home, my dad was exaggerating the situation. He said.. ‘who will take care of us here? Now, no one is at home..and even you too.. We ll get old without you, you chose so far country. Maybe if we get sick, we ll have no one to even get us the food’.

It was my first time leaving home without tears, meaybe because I am getting used to it. One day..I ll get married and leave the house. As a woman in Bali, it is free to choose whether to stay at home or..follow wherever the husband go.

I reply my dad “I can send everything, even food from Germany. Delivery order dad…dont worry. I promise.”. 🙂

I was the one who take my mom every where she wants to go (except when my bro is home). In Bali, the public transport is very rare, everyone own their own vehicle. Mostly motor bike. But my mom cant ride any type of vehicle. She can buy, but can not use it 😀

My dad work place is quite a distance from home and his duty most of the time is 24 hours. I dont like the system of this Police dept in Bali. My dad is old, they dont think of his health. He got diabetic also, easy to get tired..and sleepy all the time. I wanted to talk with his boss, once i told him so. But he said, ‘are you mad? do you want to put me in trouble?’ 😀 I was serious.

Both my brothers now are outside Bali. So only my parents are home.

Before I leave, I have arranged one of my friend to help my mom and she ll get some amount for that. She agreed. So far so good.. 🙂

I am trying to make them to smile by sending them things that-i think- they need…even they say what I do is too much. I am happy to make my parents happy.

Our biggest function is coming this month, and just few days ago I sent them something. Yesterday I called home, and my mom was sooo happy with the gift. It’s a handy craft, used to arrange the fruits during the ceremony. I bought it online via facebook..and asked to send it home. Quite expensive…but worth it. Its base is made from fiber glass and good quality of wood with fine carving.

312472_529860230387361_1881542441_n

It is a base for this gebogan

And it can be carried like this

gebogan lagi

I bought new traditional dress for my mom and sent it home too.. ^_^

304138_407575149327999_242127635_n

For my dad, I just sent a package of Diabetic medication. Hope he ll feel better soon. It is still on the way though..I sent it via Deutsche Post 🙂

Then, I sent them food, delivery order as I promised. I wish at least it can bring smile to them.

May God bless my family always and I wish I can do more for my parents..and my brothers..and others also. Oh! for me too for sure 🙂
